Not-So-Common Ways To Manage Your Time Well

May 04, 2017

Do you think that you are able to manage your schedules well to make some time out for yourself or for your hobbies? If your answer is “Yes”, then we would like you to share your strategies with us. If your answer is “No”, then you may want to identify the time-stealers that may be preventing you from sticking to your schedule. Have you tried to find out how much time you typically spend in a day on Twitter or Facebook? Have you ever tried to analyze how emails interrupt your regular work flow? Have you realized the fact that people who are good time managers can manage their attention well and maintain their focus?

When you are able to focus your attention on the task at hand, you are able to complete it on time and start off with the next task in your schedule. Here’s how you can practise a different work approach to manage your time in an efficient manner:

  • Try Out Work Rotation: Create a to-do list and allocate five minutes of time for each activity. For example, you can begin with checking emails, then shift to report preparation, and then engage in social media postings. When you are done with your social media tweets, you can again come back to checking emails and now, you will allocate ten minutes for each activity. When you complete a certain task, you can scratch it off from your list. As you go on repeating the cycle, increase the duration of each activity. When you do an activity for longer durations, you start feeling more focussed.
  • Delegate: You can consider delegating some tasks to your team. However, you have to make sure that the individuals who will work on your task have the skillset to complete the task in the desired manner. Otherwise, you will end up correcting their errors with your schedule going for a toss.
  • Take Breaks: While taking breaks too often may seem to be a major concentration-breaker, you may actually stay more focussed with short bursts of work. For example, if you are writing a blog and finding it difficult to focus on your writing for quite some time, you may consider taking a short break. Write for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break to refresh your thoughts. Have a cup of coffee or check your Facebook posts and then resume your work. When you know that you will take a break soon, you will be more likely to focus on your ongoing work.

You can maintain a log book to keep a track of your time utilization. This will allow you to identify the activities that are consuming most of your time. This will allow you to plan your schedules better and to complete diverse tasks within deadlines. If you have tried out any other ways, do write to us.
