How Bad is it to do a Second Day in the Same Underwear?

We get it- you're busy! Or perhaps the opposite is true and with staying home so much this past year you aren't doing very much at all and don't feel the need to shower or change your clothes. Whatever the reason, you're not alone. In fact, one out of every two Americans goes multiple days on a single pair of undies. Not only that, but 13 percent said they have gone for a week or longer in the same pair. Do you? It is something people don't talk about often, but clearly many of us are not changing our underwear daily. Is it really that bad, though? Here's how often you should change your underwear, and what happens when you don't follow the suggestions.

Is it Bad for Women to Wear the Same Underwear Two Days in a Row?

“Dirty or used underwear provide a breeding ground for bacteria, yeast, and fungi, and are often contaminated with fecal matter.” says Sherry A. Ross, MD, an ob-gyn in Santa Monica, California and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women’s Intimate Health.

Women are at an increased risk for genital irritation and infections when wearing underwear for extended periods of time. Because there is discharge on underwear, it lingers on your body and gets further moistened as you wear them throughout the day. Occasionally forgetting to change your underwear for a few days is unlikely to cause significant damage, but you shouldn't let this become a habit.

Acne is another concern. Wearing dirty underwear traps sweat, dirt, and bacteria and holds them close to your skin. When sweat or oil sits on the skin for too long, it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

Is it Bad for Men to Wear the Same Underwear Two Days in a Row?

Women have vaginal health and their PH balance to be concerned with, but that doesn't mean men are off the hook. Men need to be worried about smell! Fecal matter can and will get onto your men's underwear, whether it is boxers, briefs, or anything in between. The most obvious problem with sitting around in your own poop is the odor that can build up over time. You may not even realize it as many people develop “nose blindness” to their own body odors.

This isn't the only smelly odor to be concerned with. You are more than likely sweating more than you realize. Plus, if you're not changing your underwear because you aren't showering, you have body odor adding into the smell too. This is not a good combination!
